The Big Apple… The city that never sleeps… The concrete jungle where dreams are made… So many titles and so many opportunities. That’s New York City for you!

If you’ve never been… start planning (and saving) for your trip now. It’s one of those places that you simply have to experience for yourself. At least once in your lifetime!

The city radiates from within. Perhaps it is the electrifying energy of the crowds walking through Time Square… or the intense humidity that seems to rise up from the subway to the skyscrapers. And then there’s the crazy contradiction of being able to completely shut out the world and find total serenity within Central Park, be it at the heart of one of the busiest urban jungles in the world!

After a whirlwind trip to the USA, I’ve seriously been procrastinating this blog post, because frankly, how do I even begin to put into words what New York City is all about. So I decided to use some of my favourite pics to tell the story instead…

There she stands – The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom and a majestic sight against the backdrop of the city.

On our first day in the city, we were stopped by a friendly local who asked about our whereabouts. His advice stuck with me for the rest of our stay. He said, “You need to treat New York like it is Vegas and Rome rolled into one.”

I immediately got what he was trying to say. This city, so immersed in historical significance with many hidden cultural treasures, also boasts some of the most amazing nightlife and entertainment in the world. It would be an injustice to experience only one of these two extremes.

So we immediately made a plan to experience as much as we possibly could. I mean, here we were two adults alone. Kid-free. For 8 days. The longest I had ever been away from my toddlers before this was a weekend away. So yes, it all seemed so daunting and amazing all rolled into one. But we were certainly up for the challenge.

This photograph was taken minutes before a downpour while crossing a bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn.  Seated on the top of an open bus during a night tour, the heavens suddenly opened and added to the magic of the moment.

The open bus tours of New York City were a definite winner! No better way to get around and take it all in. With live commentary from the onboard crew, every tour has its own special flavour with an insider’s look at the vast expanse that is New York City.

There are also quite a few options available – with tours around Manhattan and Brooklyn as well as night tours and even a virtual reality tour of the city.

Street art in China Town, New York City.

From China Town to Soho to Little Italy, Brooklyn and more, there is just something about the streets here… In the words of Alicia Keys, “These streets will make you feel brand new. The big lights will inspire you. Hear it for New York, New York, New York”.

Like a breath of fresh air, Central Park restores the balance between concrete and nature.

The New York City Skyline by boat. I’ve always wondered how all these massive buildings stay afloat on what looks like such a small surface area.
New York City Coney Island.jpg
No summer holiday would be complete without a visit to the beach. What a view of Coney Island, taken from the boardwalk on a clear mid-week morning.
